Fashion Illustration

Week 1: Introduction to the art of Fashion Illustration (Understanding why fashion should be treated as art)

Week 2

  • Angular figures (take 2)
  • Fleshing out the Croquis
  • Fleshing out the Croquis (front, profile and back view)

Week 3

  • Analysis of body movement (spinal and limb movements)
  • Facials (Basic facial details)
  • Basics face shapes and dimensions
  • Basic eye shapes, nose, lips, hair…

Week 4

  • Introduction to fashion technical drawing
  • Flats: drawing and tracing different fashion silhouettes

Week 5: Art forms and Illustration

  • Accessories: how to draw bags, shoes, necklaces, sunglasses and indigenous headgears

Week 6

  • Review of flats
  • Elements of design

Week 7

  • Clothing the Croquis
  • Elements of design in fashion

Week 8

  • Short treatise on the color theory
  • Croquis book practice

Week 9

  • Putting together a proper fashion collection

Note: Class and take-home assignments would be based on the substantive lesson for the week and there’d be long term assignments administered to students before, between and after the course.

 

Textile Science

Week 1 – Introduction to Fabrics & Textiles

  1. ‎Introduction to fabrics and textiles.
  2. Natural fibres and the designer
  3. Artificial fibres and their uses
  4. Woven, Knitted and Printed fabrics‎…How to differentiate them.
  5. Fibre identification methods 1
  6. Discussion: The fabric industry in Nigeria, Africa and diaspora. How it affects your work as a designer.

    PRACTICAL CLASS
    :     using yarns for decorative stitches in textile design. – blanket stitch, outline, chain, French knots, herring bone, hem stitch, cross stitch, back stitches etc.

Week 2 – Natural versus artificial fibres

  1. Fibre identification methods 2
  2. Selecting fabrics for different collection
  3. Identification of fibres using the burn test

    PRACTICAL CLASS
    : Discussion on the preparation of ACTIVITY #1: Swatch Book. (If time allows, students may work on this at the end of the class time. Students will cut out different types of fabrics and will be introduced to the burn test. Hand embroidery using decorative stitches combined with working with sequence, stones and beads.

Week 3 – Fabric construction (woven non-woven & knitted fabrics)

  1. PRACTICAL CLASS: weaving with cardboard strips to create bags, purses, throw pillows etc.

Week 4 – Introduction to textile design

(TERMS & METHODS)

  1. Introduction to the principles and elements of design
  2. Colour schemes and combos
    PRACTICAL CLASS: Introduction to Fabric painting

Week 5 – Introduction to t-shirt design and printing technology

  1. PRACTICAL CLASSUse of Applique for T shirt design. Use of the Stencilling method.

Week 6 – Introduction to basic tie & dye techniques

  1. PRACTICAL CLASS: Creating outstanding fabrics using the tie and dye technique.
