Week 1- Introduction to fabrics & textiles

- Artificial fibres and their uses
- Woven, Knitted and Printed fabrics…How to differentiate them.
- Fibre identification methods 1
- Discussion: The fabric industry in Nigeria, Africa and diaspora. How it affects your work as a designer.
- Practical class: Using yarns for decorative stitches in textile design. – blanket stitch, outline, chain, French knots, herring bone, hem stitch, cross stitch, back stitches etc.
Week 2 – Natural versus artificial fibres
- Fibre identification methods 2
- Selecting fabrics for different collection
- Identification of fibres using the burn test
- Practical class: Discussion on the preparation of ACTIVITY #1: Swatch Book. (If time allows, students may work on this at the end of the class time.
- Students will cut out different types of fabrics and will be introduced to the burn test.
- Hand embroidery using decorative stitches combined with working with sequence, stones and beads.
Week 3 – Fabric construction (Woven, Non-woven & Knitted Fabrics)
- Practical class: weaving with cardboard strips to create bags, purses, throw pillows etc.
Week 4 – Introduction to textile design
- Introduction to the principles and elements of design
- Colour schemes and combos
- Practical class: Introduction to Fabric painting
Week 5 – Introduction to t-shirt design and printing technology
- Practical class: Use of Applique for T shirt design and Use of the Stencilling method.
Week 6 – Introduction to basic tie and dye techniques
- Practical class: Creating outstanding fabrics using the tie and dye technique.
